   Welcome

Welcome to the official website of the Raoni Institute!

Do you know this about the Raoni Institute?

  •  it was created in 2001 by the Western Kayapo (Mekranoti) Indians to assist the population of some 2,500 Indians who seek to preserve their cultural identity and territorial sovereignty;
  •  it operates in seven Mekranoti villages scattered in a contiguous area of 73,993 km² covered with tropical forest;
  •  it has successfully launched several ecologically sustainable development projects in the Kayapo communities;
  • it has succeeded in obtaining the Small and Low Intensity Forest Management (SLIMF) certificate of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for the Baú Indian Reserve: with its 15,000 km², this is the biggest tropical forest area in the world to have obtained such a certificate — the process was possible thanks to the assistance of the Brazilian NGOs Friends of the Earth, the Biodynamic Institute and IMAFLORA;
  • since its creation, it has booked one success after the other, setting a new example and provoking a real metamorphosis in the area;
  •  it urgently needs additional financial support not only to expand existing projects and to install new projects, but also to launch new initiatives.
